Sports Law 101: Sports Law and the NCAA
It is difficult to read the sports page without seeing an article about a university being investigated or placed on probation by the NCAA for NCAA rule violations, a student-athlete being investigated or suspended for unethical conduct, academic fraud or receipt of extra benefits in violation of NCAA rules, or a coach or student-athlete suing the NCAA. So what is the NCAA, what are the NCAA rules and who promulgated them?
This course will cover the specific NCAA rules concerning ethical conduct, amateurism, recruiting, extra benefits and institutional control. These matters will be discussed by citation to the specific NCAA rules and the use of numerous NCAA reports on universities who violated these rules. Additionally, this course will discuss numerous court decisions involving the NCAA in the fields of antitrust, due process and discrimination.
